It is important to carefully think about the things of value you want to take with you when planning a trip. A lot of people will say it is silly carrying around items of value when travelling especially if you cannot afford to lose said items. Isn’t it absurd that you have to keep the notch down even with your dressing or those nice blings you already thinking of how to rock?? But we all know how tedious and worrisome it can be when planning a trip especially when you are trying out a new destination.
Well, all that great advice about keeping things down to a minimum is alright, but what happens when you really need to carry items of great value and you have to worry about how you will keep them safe. Depending on the purpose of your travel or line of work, you most certainly will have to carry at the very least some of these items for every time you travel out of country and others for even local travel.
- The basic stuff such as your money, passport or financial cards
- Some jewelry you probably want to wear for a special event during your travels
- Items to sell or replaced e.g artworks.. etc
- Expensive equipment that are customized or specialized e.g cameras e.t.c
- Prototypes for demonstration purposes
Let us share with you some of the tips we have discovered actually helps to keep your valuables substantially safe during travels.
1. Get Insurance before you leave home
It is typical to get your basic insurance for normal items that get misplaced, lost or stolen in transit. This insurance does not usually cover high end, customized or collectibles. It is also good to know that the Airline Coverage, normal Travel Insurance or Baggage coverage will cover the full cost of your expensive valuables as these have limits on their payout values. Well, items of certain value, within a specified limit might have a higher payout but you will have to have an accompanying original receipt! Like seriously???
2. Mail them – Coming or Going
Some high end stores offer the service of mailing items of value, most times it is better to go with this option as these stores have quite a bit of great insurance and delivery options. It makes sense to mail your valuable especially those in large proportions well before your travel and with a trusted courier that will take responsibility for its safety. This option is available for the return leg of your journey as well. It is by far the better choice rather than lugging, hefting or trying to juggle between staying awake or mentally alert in order to secure your valuables.
3. Use Locks to Secure Bags
When travelling especially via a route or airline you are not so familiar with, in fact this is especially for those using Luxurious buses; please always ensure that your bags are properly locked at least to give your bags some level of protection. It is normal to lose sight of your bags especially when you are checking them in for some minutes and although it is sad but this is our reality, some bags are tampered with!… Locking your bags makes it slightly difficult for just anyone to tamper with your bags and also trust us, your bag will hold no appeal to a grab snatcher or petty thief who is looking to score something while stacking bags.
4. Lock Valuables inside Checked–in Locked Bags
In the event that you have no choice but to leave your valuables in a checked-in bag, make sure that your valuables are secured in a locked bag on its own before putting them in your larger bag. It is unfortunate to say the least but there are several cases of valuables gone missing, so this offers the protection from common thievery.
5. Carry your Valuables – Don’t pack them
The best way to carry large customized or specialized valuables is to make sure that you find a way to break it down into bits, bag them and carry with you at all times during the course of your journey. Once this is bagged, it is easier to put them on the floor under the seat in front of you or even stash them just in between your feet. For small items like cash, cards and passports, it is advisable to keep them hidden and safe in a money belt (there are loads of secure money belts out there these days). This way your valuables are on your person all the time.
